Small businesses adapt to change

Sarah Harding arranges a birthday bouquet Friday at Navarre Beach Flowers. The local florist is one of many small businesses in Navarre surviving the downward economy.

Small businesses have had to adapt to changes in the economy to keep their doors open in Navarre.

Joanna Arrington, owner of Arrington Home Furnishings, said her business had made in through the recession by focusing on customer service.

“Anyone can buy furniture anywhere, but it’s how we treat them that keep them coming back to us,” she said.

Arrington opened its doors in 2007 before the economy tanked in 2008. Arrington said she was thankful for the condo owners and military personnel that continued to provide her with business. To show her appreciation, her store offers every day discounts to active and retired military.

“We honor our military every day, not just one day here and there,” she said. She said the store had tried several different types of advertising to increase business and didn’t mark up the furniture prices like many other retailers.

“We’re hopeful for the future and we have some ideas we’re looking into to help us in the long run,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to the election year to see which way were going to go, but I’m afraid before it gets better it’s going to get worse.”

Holly Elassaad, co-owner of Pet Nation, said she too tries to focus on customer service and affordable products to combat the current economic climate. She has negotiated with her suppliers to get the best deals that she can pass on to her customers. Pet Nation also started a point system card for customers, which has really helped to ensure customers return.
