Seniors cautioned on insurance solicitation

Seniors vs Crime, a special project of the Florida Attorney General, is warning seniors of a waterline insurance direct solicitation letter.

Seniors in Navarre have received a letter from HomeServe USA, “Protecting homeowners in Florida,” offering insurance to help homeowners pay for waterline repairs and replacements. The letter tells homeowners to sign up for the protection by Jan. 9 for up to $7,000 in annual coverage.

While HomeServe is a real company offering different home repair insurance coverage, many seniors think the letter is from the water utility company. Holley-Navarre Water System has had several seniors coming into the office trying to sign up for the service.

The Better Business Bureau website states that the BBB has received “numerous complaints, from consumers across the country, concerning this business's direct mail solicitations, specifically that the solicitations' layout may cause consumers to perceive the letters as coming from the consumers' utility companies and not an independent business selling home warranty or insurance coverage.”
