When Don and Sandy Lee said they were from Des Moines, Iowa, it rang a bell; well, considering my constant senior moments, it was just a ting-a-ling, but I recalled reading rave reviews about Iowa.
“The Corn Belt, America’s Heartland, Food Capitol of the World.”
So, in my limited reasoning, I thought it was a good guess that they might’ve grew up around a farm.
Not so, said the pair of them.“
I grew up in the city, I just ate corn,” Don chuckled, and Sandy, a grin splitting her face, said, “We had an acre of land but nobody slopped hogs or milked cows or any of that.”
“Who did it, then,” I asked my dumb question for the day.
“They didn’t have any,” Nancy said, just as Sandy cracked wise; “not everybody in Iowa has cows, corn and farms,” she laughed.
