Saying goodbye to a shepherd

Bishop John H. Ricard was the bishop of the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee for 14 years, the longest of the four bishops in the diocese’s history. He retired March 11 for health reasons.As of March 11, nearly 65,000 Catholics of the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee are without a local shepherd.
Bishop John H. Ricard asked Pope Benedict XVI for an early retirement due to his continued struggle with recovering from the stroke he suffered Dec. 22, 2009. In his letter to the Catholic community, he wrote that it was a decision he made with a heavy heart.
