Cathy Holmes, was on turtle patrol this morning when she discovered a terrible sight. Vandals had shoveled up a turtle nest near walkover number 9. Eggs were thrown out of the nest; some smashed against walkover steps.
Broken eggs surrounded the nest."I called Fish and Wildlife as soon as I found it," said Holmes. "Hopefully they can get some prints from the shovel. Who would do this?"
The blade of the shovel was encrusted in egg yolk. Lt. Doug Berryman took the shovel to FFW to be analyzed.
As of June 7, there were no new leads to report according to Stan Kirkland, spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife and Conservation Commission.
"It's still under investigation. Officers are looking at leads but the case is still unsolved," said Kirkland.
He did say, however, there was some good news to report.
"The volunteers were able to move some of the eggs that were not destroyed to another nest," he said.
