Beach fire board debates boat issue

After answering a late-night emergency call two weeks ago, Navarre Beach Fire Department Chief Mike Howard put in a request for a rescue boat to the board that oversees the department.

Around midnight, beach firefighters were called to an area of the Intracoastal Waterway for a report of a capsized boat, with two adults treading water near-by.

Though it was dark, beach firefighters attached strobe lights to their safety vests and headed into the water on the department's Jet Ski in search of the two victims.

"We were able to find them, but it's unsafe for us to use a Jet Ski at night because they aren't lit," Howard said. "Since then, we have added navigational lights to the Jet Ski."

The two adults were brought safely back to shore.
