David Overbey spends his mornings walking along the shore picking up bags full of litter that beach visitors leave behind. On Aug. 20 he noticed a raft floating in the gulf.
“I helped pull it in,” Overbey said. “On one end, a large lantern was attached to it. It was the type of lantern that could be easily attached to a car battery.
It was about 6 to 8 feet long and about 5 feet wide. It was made of sturdy bamboo lashed together with rope.
“Bamboo that thick is not grown here,” Overbey said. “There may be some in South Florida.”
