County reaches tentative agreement for ‘Agri-Plex’ lease

Santa Rosa County Fair supporters can lease 25 acres needed for its “Agri-Plex” project from the county — if they present an acceptable master plan in 90 days.

“I don’t think anybody up here’s against it,” said Santa Rosa County Commissioner Don Salter at the commission’s Sept. 7 meeting. “I just don’t think we can develop that property the way it should be without developing a master plan and sticking to it.“

The Santa Rosa County Fair Association Inc., a nonprofit group created in 1991 to operate the fair, has asked for a 10-year lease for 25 acres north of East Milton Park on which it proposes to build a multiuse staging area and midway. In exchange, the association would spend at least $10,000 for capital improvements each year of the lease agreement.

County to cut Arc workers

Santa Rosa County will scrap seven disabled workers’ jobs at the end of 2010.

The Arc Santa Rosa, a nonprofit agency serving developmentally disabled clients, has provided employees for the county’s landfill and recycling center since 1990. Originally, workers sorted recyclable materials at the landfill. But their duties changed as the operation grew.

“It’s been a good agreement for these many years,” County Administrator Hunter Walker told commissioners Sept. 7, adding that the recycling center has supported itself and even made money in the past. “There’s just so much product (to be recycled) we had to change the way we use our Arc people.”

Gulf Breeze council seats filled

Four open Gulf Breeze City Council seats will be filled without an election.

Mayor Beverly Zimmern and councilmen Dick Fulford, Dana Morris and J.D. Schluter all qualified for the Nov. 2 city election, but only Fulford had a qualified challenger, David Landfair. Fulford withdrew from the race on Thursday in a short letter to City Clerk Marita Rhodes.

“I have decided to withdraw from the Gulf Breeze City Council elections for Seat D,” he wrote. “It has been a pleasure to serve this outstanding community for the past three years and prior years of 1977 to 1980.”
