The tongue-in-cheek event started out as an idea born on Pensacola Beach.
“Pensacola Beach had an honorary mayor position and we thought it would be fun to do an election on Navarre Beach,” said Mike Martino. “Audrey Scott decided that she would run for mayor in 2004. I told her that she couldn’t run unopposed so I ran against her.” Scott won an overwhelming victory that first year and Martino helped her celebrate the victory.
