County considers carbon credits

Santa Rosa County commissioners want to know more about the market for eliminating greenhouse gases before committing its landfill’s methane to the venture.
“This whole industry seems a little new,”  Commissioner Gordon Goodin of Navarre said Monday.  “I don’t want to give anybody the impression we’re going to make a lot of money on this because I don’t even know who’s going to buy it.”
Government regulations limit the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by industry, but in some cases companies are allowed to exceed that limit if they can prove an amount of gas equal to the excess has been reduced at another facility.  A consultant assured Santa Rosa commissioners the market for these verified emission reduction credits, or carbon credits, is growing.
