Churches are often in the forefront of charitable efforts. In Navarre, for example, the United Methodist Church plans to distribute Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets, as well as making youngsters merry with an Angel Tree, in which people can provide toys and other gifts for needy children up to age 13.
Last year, the church handed out more than 35 Thanksgiving baskets, said Ruthie Muecke, staff assistant. But that was nothing, compared to the Angel Tree response.
