Plans for replacing and expanding the Pensacola Bay Bridge have been a long time in the making.
Also known as the Three Mile Bridge, it was built in 1960 and is now considered “structurally deficient” according to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
Tommie Speights, FDOT’s Public information director, said that although the bridge does not pose an immediate threat to the motoring public, repairs and maintenance are constantly under way. Speights cited the main reason for the project as safety, listing the lack of a pedestrian and bicycle lanes and the narrow width of current driving lanes as two of the main concerns.
