HNFD: Increase to cover operating costs

Citing rising operating costs, members of the Holley-Navarre Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners voted to approve a 2.2 percent increase in fire tax assessments.

“The fire board is not seeking an increase in pay for firefighters,” said Fire Chief Ron Norton. “They discussed at (June’s meeting) to increase (taxes) by the amount eligible through cost of living. This year it’s 2.2 percent.”

The amount adds up to $26,000, annually.

“The money is basically going to cover rising costs,” Norton said. “We’re looking at a utility rate increase, 10 to 25 percent increase in healthcare, and dental, plus an increase in trash rates.”
When the south end of Santa Rosa County entered into a private contract for waste services, the fire district’s trash service changed. Instead of received a $60-per quarter residential rate, the district is now paying $175 per quarter – the commercial rate.
