The Benson Complex, well known as a historical landmark for Gulf Breeze residents, may come tumbling down soon.
In a compromise with the new owner of the complex, the City of Gulf Breeze has asked him to tear it down, offering up to $20,000 to help with demolition costs.
Time is running out though, and a letter sent by the city to Mitchell Rice at RMC Property Group in mid June gave him 60 days to clear the property before the city withdrew the $20,000 offer.
Shane Carmichael, Gulf Breeze Community Services Director, said he’s been in contact with Rice and Rice assured him plans are being made to demolish the building within the 60-day time frame. However, despite the rundown condition of the building, Carmichael said the complex is not considered a menace to public heath and safety, leaving the city without recourse if Rice chooses not to comply with the city council’s wishes.
“All we can do is take our offer away,” said Carmichael.
