Alabama residents name Navarre resident a hero

Charles Batson (far left) stands with a group of teenage and children volunteers in Cordova, Ala.On April 28 Batman rushed to Walker County to bring critical skills necessary for the recovery efforts after devastating tornadoes nearly demolished several Alabama cities.

“Batman” was Navarre resident Charles Batson’s nickname during his time in Dora and Cordova, Ala. He brought with him his amateur HAM radio operator and Community Emergency Response Team skills.

Dora is Batson’s hometown, and once he heard about the tornadoes, Batson contacted family members still living in the area. The next morning he got permission from Hurlburt, where he’s a Weapons Safety manager, to go and help.

“I took care of my family first; I got all family on backup power generators and went from there,” said Batson.
