The City of Milton held a service in honor of the National Day of Prayer on May 5 on the front lawn of the county courthouse.
The mission of the National Day of Prayer is to “mobilize prayer in America and to encourage personal repentance and righteousness in the culture,” according to their website. The service started in 1952 by a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress that was signed into law by President Harry Truman.
In 1988, President Ronald Regan amended that law and permanently set the day of prayer as the first Thursday in May and every year, the current president signs a proclamation encouraging citizens to pray as they see fit on this day.
