Sea turtle nesting: protecting the path to the sea

A sea turtleIt is that time of year again; time for sea turtles to come ashore and nest. With dwindling numbers of nests over the years, it is becoming more important than ever to protect the nesting mother and their eggs.

Normal nesting starts around the beginning of May with the height of the season usually occurring near the end of June. Nesting lasts until about mid August.

Mark Nicholas, biologist for the Gulf Islands National Seashore, said the number of nests in the area is down.
