County considers single-provider trash service

Customers in parts of Santa Rosa County soon could have just one choice for solid waste service.

In 2007, the Santa Rosa County Commission notified trash haulers that it would consider creating single-provider areas in 2010. When the commission meets today, it's expected to approve a request for proposals to provide residential solid waste services to the part of the county south of the Eglin Reservation -- Gulf Breeze, Holley, Midway and Navarre and Navarre Beach.

State law requires local government to give businesses at least three years' notice before adopting a single-provider system or pay displaced companies an amount equal to their gross receipts from the affected area in the previous 15 months.
