Congress chartered The American Legion in 1919 as a patriotic, wartime veterans’ organization that would be devoted to “mutual helpfulness.”
Now, 90 years later, the organization counts almost 3 million members in about 15,000 American Legion posts worldwide.
“The American Legion is the largest veteran organization,” said Cmdr. Steve Ferris of Navarre Post 382. “We are an organization founded by values and beliefs that have been around for 90 years, and we hope to be around for the next 90 years.”
