STATE OFFERS $350 MILLION IN MORTGAGE RELIEF
Thousands of homeowners who owe way more than their homes are worth may catch a break. The state is launching a $350 million program to help people who qualify reduce the principal owed on mortgages. The online application process starts Wednesday and state officials say the first 25,000 will be accepted for consideration.
UNEMPLOYMENT FALLS TO 7 PERCENT
The state's unemployment figures dropped to 7 percent in August, according to figures released Friday. The unemployment rate had held steady at 7.1 percent for the three previous months. However, the numbers show one reason the number fell is because the state's overall labor force shrank.
BOY FINDS ANCIENT CANOE NEAR OCALA
A 7-year-old boy may have uncovered a piece of ancient history while scuba diving in a lake near Ocala. After two weekends of digging, they uncovered a 20-foot-long canoe. Historical researchers are trying to find out how old it is and what kind of wood was used.
UTAH OFFICIALS SAY DNA HELPED SOLVE 1995 MURDER
A Utah sheriff traveled to Florida and helped arrest a man in an 18-year-old murder case after DNA from a cigarette helped link him to the crime. The sheriff flew to Sarasota and helped take Joseph Michael Simpson into custody this week.
UF TO BUILD NEW PRESIDENT'S HOUSE
A $5 million project that's financed by donations will get underway early next year. It will take about 14 months to build the new house. The current president's house has been empty since 2006, when President Bernie Machen bought a home off campus. He's slated to retire in December 2014.
