A friend who was on the phone with Trayvon Martin moments before he was fatally shot by George Zimmerman testified that she told the Miami teen to run after he told her he thought he was being followed. Rachel Jeantel will continue testifying Thursday in Zimmerman's second-degree murder trial. She is considered one of the prosecution's most important witnesses.
l PANTHER, RESCUED AS ORPHANED KITTEN, GIVES BIRTH
A female Florida panther rescued as an orphaned kitten and raised in captivity has given birth. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says the panther gave birth a few months after her release back into the wild. Biologists found her 1-month-old kitten Saturday at the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park in southwest Florida.
l ATTORNEYS CHALLENGE TIMELY JUSTICE ACT
A new Florida law that speeds up how quickly the state carries out the death penalty is being challenged in the state Supreme Court. Attorneys Neal Dupree and Bill Jennings — who head the state agencies that represent death row inmates after they're convicted — are leading a lawsuit filed Wednesday afternoon against Attorney General Pam Bondi and the state of Florida.
l US JUDGE TOSSES GUN CHARGE VERDICT AGAINST BUJU BANTON
The Jamaican reggae star is serving a 10-year sentence for convictions on cocaine conspiracy and trafficking charges stemming from a 2009 arrest. He faced an additional five years for the gun charge. A federal judge in Tampa tossed the gun conviction after concluding that a juror did independent research into the case during Banton's trial.
