A Navarre couple was flown by helicopter to Baptist Memorial Thursday evening for injuries sustained in a head-on car wreck on Highway 98 and Catamaran Drive.
Yuki Mullins, 43, and Randall Mullins, 52, were listed in critical condition after a 2005 Dodge pickup truck driven by Douglas Litchfield, 61, of Navarre, crossed the eastbound lane of Hwy. 98, striking the Mullins’ front right side of their GMC SUV, which was headed westbound.
The Mullins were the third car hit by Litchfield in a six-car accident that happened around 7 p.m.
Litchfield had been driving eastbound on Hwy. 98 and was approaching the intersection of Catamaran Drive when he struck two cars that had been waiting to turn into the street.
Rachel Segovia, 20, and Trent Segovia, 5, both of Navarre, reported no injuries. Louis Carter, 50, of Niceville, was treated for minor abrasions.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, after striking the two cars, Litchfield’s truck swerved left, crossed the median and crossed westbound traffic. At that time, he struck the Mullins’ vehicle, and later that of Diana Jeffers, 52, of Pace.
Jeffers’ car rolled over, but she reported only minor injuries.
“There was no entrapment and we didn’t have to use the Jaws of Life to get anyone out,” said Ron Norton, acting fire chief of the Holley-Navarre Fire District.
Litchfield’s truck came to rest against the Sea Shell Factory fence on the north side of the highway. At that time, a car driven by Monem Razek, 63, of Navarre, was hit with debris.
Charges are pending against Litchfield and the FHP is investigating the cause of the accident. No comment could be offered on Litchfield’s condition at the time of the accident.
Traffic was stopped completely, both east and westbound, for an hour while medical and fire crews worked to clear the scene.
Both lanes were reopened at 8 p.m.
