County disposes of recycling duties

Santa Rosa County will no longer be handling the recycling program after voting to contract out the service during a Jan. 19 regular board meeting.

The board of commissioners agreed to transfer the recycling program to West Florida Recycling. District 2 Commissioner Bob Cole was pleased to finally have the decision reached. "I brought this to the board, researched this and got it passed," he said.

According to Cole, the move will save the county between $250,000 and $400,000 a year, with the county receiving $50,000 from West Florida Recycling. The cost savings will come from the county no longer needing to allocate funds for capital expenses to replace equipment and pay employees.
