County supports Gulf RESTORE act

The Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners passed a joint resolution last week between the eight coastal counties most affected by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill to support the federal RESTORE the Gulf Coast Act.

The bill, co-sponsored by U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-FL, and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-FL, stands for Resources and Ecosystems Sustainability, Tourism Opportunities and Revived Economy of the Gulf Coast Act and aims to distribute BP fine money associated with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill to the five states affected by the spill.

The act proposes that 35 percent of the Clean Water Act penalties charged to BP be distributed equally to Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.
