A fire at Holley Dirt Company and Specialty Sand Products on River Road in Navarre, owned by former Santa Rosa County commissioner Gordon Goodin, will continue to burn throughout the day.
Ron Norton, Holley-Navarre Fire Department Chief, said the fire was contained in a large pit but would probably continue to burn for a couple of days.
“We got called out to an unknown fire in that area at 2:20 a.m., and we found a landfill full of natural vegetation, not trash, in blaze,” Norton said. He was unsure how many cubic yards of natural debris was on fire.
He said the pit probably had a hot spot on Thursday or Friday and caught fire sometime during the weekend. The fire is being contained and covered with sand and dirt. No structure was involved in the fire, but a fire engine is on standby to watch for sparks that could potentially reach the woods.
