Santa Rosa County Commissioner Don Salter received the 2011 Active Base Community Leader award from the Association of Defense Communities.
Kay Rasmussen, with the Development Council of Okaloosa County, presented the award to Salter on Monday during the commission’s committee meeting. Salter was recognized for the award July 19 during the ADC 2011 Annual Conference in Norfolk, Va.
“The award is in recognition of his long-standing efforts in support of Northwest Florida’s military,” she said. “Under his guidance, he has helped to protect Naval Air Station Whiting Field from encroachment while strengthening ties among the region’s installations, local leaders and businesses for more than 20 years.”
Retired U.S. Army Gen. Michael Ferguson commended Salter for the work he has done for veterans and those currently serving in the military. He said a great leader had two key qualities.
