Mary Esther man killed in SR87 crash

Photo by John WarnerOne man was killed and three others were seriously injured following an early morning accident Saturday.

Geoffrey S. Hough, 21, of Mary Esther, was pronounced dead at the scene of a two-car crash at the intersections of State Road 87 and Nevada Street in Navarre, Fla., around 5:30 a.m.

John M. Lee, 23, Toni Renee Humphreys, 25, and Matthew R. Couch, 26, all of Navarre, were transported to Baptist Medical Center in Gulf Breeze for treatment of their injuries.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol press release, Kenneth J. Reed, 30, of Navarre, was traveling northbound on the left turn of SR 87, and had stopped at the intersection of Nevada Street.

Lee was traveling southbound of SR 87, approaching the same intersection. Lee stated to patrol officers that he saw Reed’s car and believed he had enough time to make a left turn onto Nevada Street.

Reed began making his turn onto Nevada Street, entering into the southbound lane of SR 87 and into Lee’s path.

Lee’s truck struck the right front of Reed’s truck. Lee’s truck rotated clockwise, and the two vehicles hit each other again in the rear.

Lee’s truck rotated again and rolled over, ejecting Hough – Lee’s passenger – who was not wearing a seatbelt.

Humphreys and Couch, also Lee’s passengers, along with Lee, were not wearing seatbelts either.

Reed received minor injuries as a result of the crash and was treated and released from Baptist Hospital.

FHP is investigation the cause of the crash and alcohol may have been a factor. Charges are pending.
