Unforeseen weather conditions mix poorly with smoke

Smoke from a controlled burn in Naval Live Oaks Reservation mixed with fog during unexpected weather conditions causing loss of visibility to a portion of U.S. Highway 98.A mix of fog and smoke caused a portion of U.S. Highway 98 to be temporarily closed March 18 through March 22 during the morning hours.
The smoke came from a controlled burn completed by the Gulf Islands National Seashore in the Naval Live Oaks Reservation. The burn block was on the north side of U.S. 98 on the park’s easternmost boundary on March 17, according to a press release from the National Seashore. In the press release, Superintendent Daniel Brown explained that these burns were a routine part of maintaining the park.
