County decides against mandatory trash service

South Santa Rosa County residents will be able to decide whether to pay a contractor to pick up their garbage and recycling or to haul it themselves.
The Santa Rosa County Commission decided last week not to require participation in a single-provider residential solid-waste service.
“What we told the people we were going to do in the beginning, which did not include mandatory collection, we should implement,” Commissioner Don Salter, Chumuckla, said at the commission’s March 10 regular meeting. “As we talked about, we would be able to tweak that program over time so, once again, I think we should move forward with the initial plan.”
