Tarball clean-up continued outside of nesting grounds

As a part of the continued clean up, a crew of men work to dig down six to eight inches to find remaining tarballs on the Gulf Islands National Seashore on Feb. 24. On Feb. 24, clean up crews were on the Gulf Islands National Seashore beaches between Navarre Beach and Pensacola Beach removing tarballs.
Crew members said the surface had already been cleaned, and they are now digging six to eight inches below the sand’s surface to look for tarballs. The tarballs crews removed were small and light brown in color.
