Incredible comeback

Photo by Dickie WilliamsNavarre trailed the Walton Braves by 16 points at halftime of Friday’s high school football shootout, but the Raiders put on their “angry“ game faces to overcome the Braves’ explosive offense and battled their way back to a 42-36 home victory.

Running back Dewayne Carter led the way for Navarre with five touchdowns, including three in the second half. The-running back accounted for 200 rushing yards on 21 carries. Quarterback Colton Kane ran for 164 yards on 14 carries and Navarre’s other touchdown.

But it was the defense that made it possible for the Raiders to make their second-half comeback by putting pressure on Walton’s vaunted quarterback, Liam Miller.

The Raiders committed a series of miscues that led to three Braves’ scores in the last five minutes of the first half, including a pooch kick recovered by Navarre but turned over to Walton because the kick failed to travel the necessary 10 yards; a bad center snap; and two fumbles.

Walton’s Miller was held to a lone touchdown pass in the second half, but still finished with four touchdown tosses and a massive 443 passing yards, connecting on 26 of 49 throws.
