Before radiation can start, there are several procedures that take place. I'm not sure of the medical terms, so bear with me. In two weeks, I will go and have an image scan of the area to have radiation. They will pinpoint the precise area and mark it on my body. I will need to be careful not to rub the marked area off. If it starts to fade, I will need to inform them so the mark can be reapplied. I will have 33 treatments, Monday through Friday.

 

My doctor and his assistant explained all the side effects. The most noticeable will be tiredness starting about two weeks into the process, and my skin will begin to look irritated from the radiation. They suggested what to use on my skin when it starts to turn red and recommended using a mild wash on the treated area. I can't wear any deodorant under the left arm or use a hand shaver. It is recommended to use an electric shaver. (Mother's Day gift.) No lotions, perfumes, powders…Almost the same instructions before having a mammogram.

 

Another procedure will be a body-image scan. That way when I go every day for radiation, I will be able to lay in the exact same spot. It will make the beams of radiation that much more precise. We’re looking for my treatment to start in about two-and-a-half weeks. I will not be done until the middle of July. My children will be out of school and I hope to keep them busy. It will be a challenge. I am worried about the skin getting irritated and tender. I will deal with it the same way I did the chemo: One day at a time. I am a strong person. Until the time comes to start, I will enjoy my food a little more, my energy to plan activities to attend, and my quiet time. Especially since the children will be out of school come June 4th.
