Surviving Step by Step: Getting the Hang of It

In my last blog, I finished with “Time for a Nap.” I came close to falling asleep, but then the children started coming home from school. I was losing energy fast. It was an order-out night for the kids; their favorite, pizza. By Saturday morning, the full force had landed in my body. I had never felt this bad before. My double ear infection came close. I was on the couch 90 percent of the time. There was nothing that could settle my stomach. I didn’t have the usual nausea, getting-sick symptoms; instead, mine was an always-hungry, burning-empty-stomach, trying-to-find-something-to-settle-my-stomach feeling.

Zapped for energy, not much was done the whole day. I lived off Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey ice cream, soups and Ramen noodles. Within half an hour of eating, I was back to square one. My husband was so good keeping the children entertained. They did some shopping in town and at the flea markets. My youngest had an Optimist Club project to do in the morning, so my neighbor was able to take him along with her son. They did manage some leaf-raking, but the yard already needs it again. They all were treated to their favorite Mexican restaurant and, on the way home, picked me up some cold and fruity goodies from the store.

Sunday was better than the day before, with each day becoming more manageable. I did some food shopping Monday; afterward I was tired but glad to have been able to venture out. The pollen is not making me happy. My throat feels scratchy. I limit my time outside for now. I will just concentrate on the inside chores and reading.

I will cook for the whole family tonight. Not often do we all eat together. Between work schedules and baseball, sometimes there are days when only two are here. So this will be exciting to me. Maybe I’ll bake some chocolate chip cookies, too. They will devour them. The thought is almost more exciting than watching my Boston Red Sox win against the Yankees over the weekend. I called it therapy; I needed to feel good about something.

Next week is my big doctor’s appointment with the radiology oncologist. Will keep you informed. Until then, my Faith will keep me strong and my Family will make me smile. Life is good.
