Navarre High grad Jeff Van Camp rallied Florida Atlantic University to a 29-23 come-from-behind win against winless Western Kentucky on Saturday, giving the Owls the lead for good with a 3-yard scoring run midway through the third quarter.
The redshirt junior completed 16 of 30 passes for 266 yards and three scores to help FAU extend the Hilltoppers' losing streak to 19 games, the longest current streak in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision.
The Owls are 4-7 overall with a 4-3 Sun Belt Conference record. Western Kentucky is 0-11, 0-7 in the conference.
In 2009, Van Camp has completed 94 of 157 passes (59.9 percent) for 1,152 yards and 10 scores with just two interceptions. The Owls are 2-2 in games Van Camp has started since a shoulder injury ended the season and career of standout senior Rusty Smith against Middle Tennessee State on Oct. 31.
Florida Atlantic will play archrival Florida International in the annual "Shula Bowl" at 7 p.m. Saturday in Miami. The Owls lead the series 6-1. The Panthers' only win came in 2005. FAU won a 57-50 shootout in overtime last year to win its sixth game and become bowl eligible. Nothing but pride is on the line this year. FIU is 3-8 overall, 3-4 in the Sun Belt Conference.
