UWF baseball trio earns All-South honors; Argos jump to No. 6 in nation Barlow, Prichard and Stephens earn spots on ABCA and NCBWA all-region teams
PENSACOLA – Kaleb Barlow, Drew Prichard and Jake Stephens of the University West Florida baseball team added to their postseason honors this week, as all three earned spots on the All-South Region teams selected by the American Baseball Coaches Association and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Not only did those three Argonauts earn individual honors, but UWF as a team moved up to No. 6 in the nation in the Collegiate Baseball Division II national coaches' poll after its runner-up finish at the NCAA South Regional. South Region champion Tampa took over the No. 1 spot in the national poll and will be the favorite at the NCAA Division II Championships starting Saturday in Cary, N.C.
Stephens was named to the All-South Region first team by both organizations, and he was also named the South Region Pitcher of the Year by the NCBWA. Barlow and Prichard both earned second-team all-region selections on the ABCA and NCBWA teams.
Stephens also was named pitcher of the year on the Daktronics all-region team. He is the second Argonaut to be named regional pitcher of the year after Daniel Vargas-Vila earned the honor from the ABCA in 2011. Stephens finished his senior season with an 8-1 record, and he led all starting pitchers in the Gulf South Conference with a 1.63 ERA. The right-hander was also the GSC Pitcher of the Year and earned a spot on the All-GSC first team.
Barlow finished 2013 with great offensive numbers for a second baseman, as the junior hit .333 with 10 doubles, 11 home runs, 46 runs scored and 50 RBIs. He led the GSC in home runs and slugging percentage (.592), and he also ranked third in RBIs. Prichard was also a big contributor as a corner outfielder, as the senior hit .335 with 16 doubles, seven homers, 44 runs scored and 53 RBIs. Prichard ranked second in the league in RBIs and third in home runs.
West Florida had one of its best seasons in school history in 2013, finishing the year with a 39-14 record and one win away from a trip to the NCAA Division II Championships. The Argonauts advanced to their fourth straight NCAA regional tournament in 2013, and they also advanced to the regional championship game for the second time in school history.
