For the millions of Americans suffering from lupus, a debilitating autoimmune disease for which there is no cure, a new breakthrough in treatment may provide the one thing patients and doctors alike have been searching for: hope.

Last year, researchers announced the imminent debut of a drug called Benlysta, the first drug in over five decades that could be used to treat the disorder.

Wanda Argersinger, executive director of The Lupus Support Network in Pensacola, called the announcement a “miracle.”
