The Troy University Trojans sacked Florida Atlantic's slim bowl hopes and FAU quarterback Jeff Van Camp -- five times --Saturday in a 47-21 rout of the Owls in Alabama.
Van Camp, a redshirt junior from Gulf Breeze who played football at Navarre High School, completed 22 of 33 passes for 193 yards and a score and rushed for a touchdown in his third start after replacing injured starter Rusty Smith. But the Owls' defense allowed a school record 651 yards against Troy two weeks after yielding the old school record of 622 against UAB.
“Troy really played a great defensive game,” Van Camp said in published reports. “Give it to Troy, they played a great game, they won the conference and they are going to represent the Sun Belt and look really good.”
The Trojans improved to 8-3, 6-0 in the Sun Belt Conference. FAU is 3-7 with a 3-3 conference mark. Teams must win at least six games to qualify for a bowl; with just two games remaining, the Owls can finish no better than 5-7.
Alfred Morris ran for 137 yards, setting a Florida Atlantic season record with 1,112.Van Camp did not throw an interception, but did lose a fumble late in the first half that led to a Troy field goal.
For the season, Van Camp has played in eight games, completing 61.4 percent of his passes (78 of 127) for 886 yards with seven touchdowns and two picks. The Owls host winless Western Kentucky at 3 p.m. Saturday before a season-ending showdown against arch-rival Florida International (3-8 overall, 3-4 Sun Belt) at 7 p.m. in Miami.
