Anticipation was in the air as 25 to 30 kids lined up at Banana Beach in Summerwinds West to hear Jane “J. J.“ Peuler explain the rules to the weekly crab-catching contest.
They strained like race horses in the starting gate while Peuler gave them a lesson in how to catch a crab and the types of crabs found on Navarre Beach. At about 8:10 p.m. the kids were out the door heading to the beach to find their prey. After 45 minutes, a horn blew which let the contestants know that they had five minutes left in the contest.
